American white pelicans are perhaps unusual looking birds native to North America.  Unlike other pelicans, the white pelican doesn't hunt for fish by diving - it simply puts its head underwater and scoops them up.  The American white pelican's beak can hold up to 3 gallons of water at a time, and once a fish has been caught, it points its bill down and allows the water to slowly drain.
